Public Libraries

Settlement and Public Libraries: Initiatives and Potential

The purpose of this information session is to review the opportunity to enhance settlement service delivery by partnering with public libraries and to provide practical information on how that is being done through the Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP) program of CIC. The outcome of the session will be an enhanced understanding of the group program and information service potential arising from a library and settlement partnership. It will focus on what libraries do and how those working in the settlement sector can best use library services and collections to enhance their service delivery in general and through the LSP program in particular.

Laura Heller is the Provincial Coordinator of the Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP) program of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Ontario Region. Laura has been involved in the settlement sector for many years as a librarian and has additional experience in developing multimedia resources for educational and community development purposes. Laura worked throughout the 1980s at Cross Cultural Communication Centre, one of the key organizations in the development of the settlement sector in Toronto and has since been involved with many others, most recently developing two videos and users’ manuals for the Settlement Workers in Schools program.
