A 4. Integrating an Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression Approach to Settlement Services
Level: Introductory / Intermediate
The workshop will have an interactive discussion to analyze and understand the current system and the systemic barriers experienced by newcomers, immigrants and refugees to access appropriate mental health services .While cultural competency and diversity trainings remain the dominant approach, there is a need to closely look at social disparities and improve the access of racialized groups to services. Using racism as an entry point in discussing oppression will foster a clear understanding of the workings of power and privilege in local, organizational and individual contexts. A presentation will be made of the AR/AO framework that has been successfully operating at Across Boundaries. Different tools and resources will be used including case studies, new research, power point and other creative activities to ensure participation of the participants.
